Project Management Fundamentals Workshop 63

This workshop in Project Fundamentals is for Project Managers and anyone else who works in, or is planning to be involved in project planning, scheduling, budgeting and/or monitoring. It provides essential knowledge about Project Life Cycle processes common to any endeavor -- whether economic enterprise, infrastructure, industrial product, social, or community development – as well as best practice methodologies, tools and techniques for their management.

Initially, the course provides a rapid overview of the Project Management Institute's (PMI)® five (5) Project Management Process Groups, ten (10) Knowledge Areas and 49 individual Processes in their “Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide)—6th Edition.” The participants are then taught and -- through experiential learning exercises -- apply selected best practice methodologies for managing the first four process groups; with simulation games to reinforce understanding of Critical Path and Earned Value implementation and monitoring concepts. Since the workshop focus is on enhancing participant PM knowledge about universal best practices, and competency in selected process group areas, it includes several tools, techniques and insights outside of PMI’s PMBOK® Guide.

This course meets the formal educational pre-requisites for individuals interested in applying for PMI’s Project Management Professional (PMP)® certification examination.  While it is an excellent foundation to facilitate preparation for the PMP exam, the workshop does not provide a comprehensive review of the material contained in the PMBOK® Guide; but is highly recommended as a precursor before taking a PMP Exam Review Course.

By the end of this course, successful participants will be able to:

  • Understand generic project management concepts and terminologies
  • Recognize the Project Manager’s Roles and Responsibilities within various organizational structures and at different stages of project processing
  • Appreciate the value of a working-style personality test, and apply it to build effective project teams
  • Apply interrelated Tree and Log frame methodologies for identifying, scoping and planning projects
  • Apply several tools and techniques for systematically identifying, estimating and assessing the extent of project risks, and how to deal with them
  • Understand classic Work Breakdown Structure (WBS), Gantt Chart and Milestone technique basics
  • Use Critical Path network diagramming to develop Project Implementation Plan schedules from a WBS
  • Monitor projects with Milestone and Critical Path Analysis
  • Appreciate the value of dedicated software programs to monitor projects
