Everyday life is full of risks… crossing the street, driving a car, coding a program, building a facility... risk is inherent in all of our activities. Many do not consider risks when planning their projects, risks that can have both positive (an opportunity) or negative (threat) effect on the project's success.

In some instances, risks that happen can mean total failure, cost or schedule overruns, and other adverse impacts on the project. Some would like to shy away from managing project risks for fear of being tagged as "paranoid". But the consequences of not managing project risks can sometimes be fatal (e.g., loss of lives) and can unduly harm the reputation of both the project manager and the organization.

This course will introduce you to the definition of risk management and general principles or concepts, including the risk management process aligned to the Standard for Project Risk Management by PMI®. At the end of the course, the participant will have an appreciation on why risk management is essential in managing a project and increase the rate of success of any project.

Mary Jane O. Rosales, CPA, CIA, CCSA, is a consultant in management and training services, in the areas of internal auditing, enterprise risk management (ERM) and financial statement analysis, a career that steadily grew after early retirement from Petron Corporation in January 2010. Thanks to her early association with the Institute of Internal Auditors Philippines (IIAP), she was given countless opportunities to conduct seminars on internal auditing and ERM and perform quality assessments of internal audit activities. All these happened while she held director positions in IIAP, became its President in 2008 and headed various committees also in IIAP.

Jane's experience in internal auditing spanned over nine years, largely in Petron Corporation, as its Chief Audit Executive and thereafter its Refinery Finance Manager. She was also assigned to establish ERM in Petron Corporation, a responsibility she handled for three years until she was moved to the Refinery.

Her other experiences in the field of risk management involved conduct of the following:

  • Training and consulting on risk management for a not-for-profit organization (2013 and 2012)
  • Training and consulting on risk and control assessments for 4 provincial governments (from 2010 to 2013)
  • Training and consulting on risk and control assessments for one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the Philippines (2012)
  • Training on risk and control assessments for a budget hotel (2011)
  • Training on risk and control assessments for a life insurance company (2011 & 2012)
  • Training on Enterprise Risk Management for a government agency’s Policy/Planning and Monitoring groups, a sugar milling plan in the island of Negros and another government ageny’sExecom and Internal Audit (2016)

Jane is a Distinguished Toastmasters, the highest norm given to a member of the Toastmasters Club.
